5 out of 5 stars The Secret saved my life!   December 4, 2007
1385 out of 1406 found this review helpful

Please allow me to share with you how "The Secret" changed my life and in a very real and substantive way allowed me to overcome a severe crisis in my personal life. It is well known that the premise of "The Secret" is the science of attracting the things in life that you desire and need and in removing from your life those things that you don't want. Before finding this book, I knew nothing of these principles, the process of positive visualization, and had actually engaged in reckless behaviors to the point of endangering my own life and wellbeing. br / At age 36, I found myself in a medium security prison serving 3-5 years for destruction of government property and public intoxication. This was stiff punishment for drunkenly defecating in a mailbox but as the judge pointed out, this was my third conviction for the exact same crime. I obviously had an alcohol problem and a deep and intense disrespect for the postal system, but even more importantly I was ignoring the very fabric of our metaphysical reality and inviting destructive influences into my life. br / My fourth day in prison was the first day that I was allowed in general population and while in the recreation yard I was approached by a prisoner named Marcus who calmly informed me that as a new prisoner I had been purchased by him for three packs of Winston cigarettes and 8 ounces of Pruno (prison wine). Marcus elaborated further that I could expect to be [...] raped by him on a daily basis and that I had pretty eyes.br / Needless to say, I was deeply shocked that my life had sunk to this level. Although I've never been homophobic I was discovering that I was very rape phobic and dismayed by my overall personal street value of roughly $15. I returned to my cell and sat very quietly, searching myself for answers on how I could improve my life and distance myself from harmful outside influences. At that point, in what I consider to be a miraculous moment, my cell mate Jim Norton informed me that he knew about the Marcus situation and that he had something that could solve my problems. He handed me a copy of "The Secret". Normally I wouldn't have turned to a self help book to resolve such a severe and immediate threat but I literally didn't have any other available alternatives. I immediately opened the book and began to read. br / The first few chapters deal with the essence of something called the "Law of Attraction" in which a primal universal force is available to us and can be harnessed for the betterment of our lives. The theoretical nature of the first few chapters wasn't exactly putting me at peace. In fact, I had never meditated and had great difficulty with closing out the chaotic noises of the prison and visualizing the positive changes that I so dearly needed. It was when I reached Chapter 6 "The Secret to Relationships" that I realized how this book could help me distance myself from Marcus and his negative intentions. Starting with chapter six there was a cavity carved into the book and in that cavity was a prison shiv. This particular shiv was a toothbrush with a handle that had been repeatedly melted and ground into a razor sharp point. br / The next day in the exercise yard I carried "The Secret" with me and when Marcus approached me I opened the book and stabbed him in the neck. The next eight weeks in solitary confinement provided ample time to practice positive visualization and the 16 hours per day of absolute darkness actually made visualization about the only thing that I actually could do. I'm not sure that everybody's life will be changed in such a dramatic way by this book but I'm very thankful to have found it and will continue to recommend it heartily.br /

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Need This Book...   February 20, 2007

You don't need this book. You already know everything you need to know to be wise and prosperous. It's already inside of you. Everyone is looking for some magic formula which will allow them to be happy and successful. We all believe that there is some "secret of life" that we need to plug into, and then our fears and angst will disappear and we will glide effortlessly through the cosmos into blissful well-being.br /br /Well, look no further. I am going to reveal to you the Ultimate Secret, and it is not going to cost you a penny! Are you ready? Here it is: The secret of life is... that THERE IS NO SECRET! br /br /It sounds like pablum doesn't it? But only about 5% of the people who read this are going to understand it and believe it. I challenge you to embrace this thought and analyze it. Take it to its logical conclusion, and when you can truly accept this wisdom, you will be able to shed your fears and angst. You may not reach a point where you feel that you are gliding effortlessly through the cosmos, but you will be well on the path toward that utopia. And you will resonate with a happiness you never before thought possible.br /br /I am a firm believer in the Law of Attraction. And I am a devout believer that we are all exactly where we are supposed to be. We truly do create our own destiny. We are always at a place which has been created by the sum total of our thoughts and actions to this point in time. I will take this dictum a step further: We are all exactly where we WANT to be!br /br /You say, "But I want to be a medical doctor, and I am not there!" I answer, "You would be there if you had taken the appropriate actions and trained your thinking to be there. You would have studied what you needed in school to prepare yourself for college and then medical school -- if you truly wanted to be a doctor."br /br /You say, "But I wanted to be a professional basketball player!" I answer, "If you truly wanted that, you would have spent all your waking hours practicing dribbling, passing, shooting, and studying court and team dynamics."br /br /You see, its really that simple. There is no secret other than focusing on a goal and then doing what it takes to get there. Most of us, however, find it far too easy to be lazy and then believe the excuses that we provide for ourselves.br /br /No, you don't need this book. It's philosophy can be summed up quite robustly in one, simple, Biblical phrase: "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." This is the Law of Attraction, and it truly works. It's not magic and it's not a secret. It is a universal, irrefutable, and immutable principle. If you bequeath peace and harmony to those around you, you will recieve peace and harmony. If you disseminate good will and love, you will be blessed with good will and love. If, however, you emanate ill-will and a cynical attitude, that is what you will receive from the world.br /br /No, you don't need this book... but I highly recommend it. You see, as simple as it is to get what we want out of life, we have to overcome all of our past conditioning, all of our negativiy, and all of the bad habits we have spent a lifetime to form. It's very simple, but it is anything but easy! This book will help you to condition your toughts to break your inertia and get rid of bad habits of thought. br /br /Start with this book as your point of departure into a new conciousness, a new awareness, and a new philosophy of life. Then read some of the other excellent books which other reviewers have recommended. You will find that it is easier to be a benfactor than a burden. Offer the best of yourself to the world, and then prepare yourself to receive in abundance!

5 out of 5 stars Roll up your sleeves and get to work!   February 19, 2007

The Secret presents a concept known in New Thought circles from the movement's inception. Its called, The Law of Attraction. Every New Thought branch of Christianity, from Unity to Religious Science to Christian Science to the more popularized traditional Christian presentations of Norman Vincent Peale, Robert Schuler and now Joel Osteen have taught it. br /br /It is no secret that each individual influences his or her immediate surroundings by the kinds of attitudes they hold. A person who is always struggling with hard conditions and relationships is very likely suffering from some form of low self esteem. No matter how hard they try to make their life work, it will not work because they are out of harmony with themselves. How we see ourselves is reflected through everything we do. Your life can only be as good as you feel about yourself.br /br /Unfortunately, traditional Christianity has contributed greatly to humankind's worm-of-the-dust mentality. This, I'm sure, is why so many Christian reviewers of this product deride it as the work of the devil. It is true, thankfully, that the message of the movie goes against that hard-core belief that humanity is intrinsically sinful. It is understandable how a person whose mind is closed to anything more than what they learned in Sunday School would consider this movie borderline blasphemous. br /br /Fortunately, like gravity or the laws governing mathematics, spiritual principles are not confined to the often restricted parameters of religious fanaticism, in whatever form it comes. The individual, a product of the Cosmos, is designed to interface with its spiritual source. The creative, spiritual laws that were available to a Jesus or a Buddha are available to all. Some recognize these laws and comply with them while others remain ignorant of them, groping through life beneath the weight of superstition and fear of a capricious and angry god they do not know. br /br /It is not some great god in the sky that puts the individual in their place in life; it is the individuals themselves. The Secret presents a set of ideas that can help a person begin to interact with their creative Source and set into motion new causes that will produce desired effects. br /br /If there is a downside to The Secret (movie and book), it is not so much the presentation itself as the attitude of those who are forever looking to get something for nothing. You will not change your self image by plugging a movie into your DVD player, even if the movie is inspiring and even if you watch it a thousand times. Inspiration, in this sense, can be little more than a feel-good drug that colors your emotions with feelings that suggest things are getting better when they're really not. You can learn to feel good, drive around town in your new Ferrari, and still be engaged in self-defeating behavior. br /br /The Secret is not a magic cure-all. Nor does it contain knowledge that has been intentionally kept from the bulk of humanity. The reason the bulk of humanity have not adopted the ancient ideas presented in this film is because doing so requires commitment, absolute dedication, a reassessment of current beliefs (religious in particular), and the acceptance of the truth that your life is as it is because of the way you see yourself. If you don't like where you are in life, you can change it. My suggestion is to watch The Secret then roll up your sleeves and get busy putting these ideas to work!br /br /J Douglas Bottorff, author of The Whisper of Pialigosbr /

5 out of 5 stars Agree   December 6, 2006

Some of the reviews here seem to point to the movie and not the book, but what I believe many are saying is you really can't have on without the other. The book gives you many more details and expounds on SOME ways of pllacing thoughts in your heart to create your universe, but when you add the dvd and, as R. Gangi says, add the other books too, you end up with a workable plan to change your life and attract what you desire. Highly recommended.br /br /E. 5 out of 5 stars The Secret is becoming Common Knowledge   February 5, 2007

The success of the "The Secret" video and book offers a classic example of effective viral marketing. The work has emerged into the mainstream through word-of-mouth the same way as "What the Beep" became a hot hit. br /br /Why has "The Secret" been adopted and promoted by so many? The secret is the law of attraction. We attract into our lives what we see in our minds. We know this truth in our bones. It's encoded into our DNA. We know without being told that we we think, say and do creates our personal reality as well as our shared social reality.br /br /Those who have studied ancient mystical philosophies or modern New Thought already know the secret law of attraction. The wise souls who have applied these principles to change their thinking have seen the effects in their daily lives. "The Secret" offers suggestions for making the inner changes that yield outer changes.br /br /My main criticism is that both the video and the book suffer from too much repetition. The video could have been about 15 minutes shorter, and the book could be about 10-30 pages shorter. How many times do we need to hear different experts saying the same thing? (The DVD has a summary segment that reviews all the cores ideas.)br /br /So, if you already know about the law of attraction, the book and video are a refresher course. If these ideas are brand new to you, "The Secret" will blow your mind, that is, it will blow away your mental blocks. The key, of course, is accepting responsibility for what we draw into our lives. This is where we need common global sense to guide our daily choices.
